Resort Update: Mt. Baldy

The ThirtyTwo crew decided it was high time to check out a diamond in the rough. Yup, that's right, we hightailed it straight through dirty, traffic-choked L.A. and headed straight for the hills to go snowboarding at Mt. Baldy. Noting that their official brochure beckons you to "drop in on Southern California's closest, largest and best mountain," and that they just got about 12 inches of new snow, we thought we would do the 45-minute drive from ThirtyTwo headquarters and go shred the gnar.
Mt. Baldy is a huge mountain that you can pretty much see from anywhere in Los Angeles or Orange County, as long as there's no smog. That's why you so often forget about this little gem--out of sight out of mind. When is there not smog in L.A.? Okay, enough of that crap.

This little resort has only four lifts, and all of them are two-person. A lift ticket is $45 bucks, but come on, nobody walks in L.A., so $45 bucks isn't that bad. The resort is steeper than you think, with plenty of rock drops, tree runs and some open powder fields. I don't think they have any type of snow cats or grooming. It only snowed about 12 inches and the base was only another 12 to 30 inches, so a few of us scraped some rocks. I, however, got lucky…I was saved by the P-Tex gods.
All in all, it was a super fun day of snowboarding. Scope the photos, and if you're ever in SoCal and it's raining, check Mt. Baldy's site to see if they're getting snow. Then go shred!--Brian Cook
